  • For millennia, man-made light was just a technical way to replace the taken-for-granted daylight at night-time. It has only been a few decades since the realization that besides providing technical quantities of photons, definitely necessary for the human visual process, artificial lighting had the power to create atmosphere, to have a major impact on moods, to emphasize beauty (and hide ugliness), to generate visual interest, to be a major factor in some crucial physiological processes and to ensure safety at night-time.

Professionally manipulating light in such a way as to bring together all these qualities of light has evolved into a culture – the culture of light.

Susanna Antico Lighting Design Studio is dedicated at three levels to the propagation of this culture and of the understanding of its importance for the human environment the general public, the future clients, the profession

  • The understanding and appreciation of the general public:

An educated public will know how to make its own personal environment enjoyable and energy efficient with quality lighting and will know what to demand from its elected representatives so that the public environment it uses be just as safe, pleasing, attractive and sustainable.

Arch. Antico also teaches the basics of lighting design to students of other design disciplines in the framework of higher education institutions.

  • The understanding and appreciation of potential clients and other professionals:

An educated client will welcome the great added value that quality lighting can bring to his/her project.

Professionals of other disciplines in the various fields of architecture will understand the way quality lighting can enhance and emphasise the value of their own work.

  • The development of the profession of lighting design:

In parallel to the acquisition of knowledge by the clients and the end-users, it is crucial that the critical mass of professional lighting practitioners grows and gets recognized everywhere. Arch. Antico is an active member of professional lighting designers’ associations at national and international levels where she participates in the promotion of the profession and the support of students who have chosen Architectural Lighting Design as their future career.
